Heart of Oak Feeders come from
the Oak Tree from start to finish. The Feeder
Trees are cut and delivered into the mill on semi trailers,
unloaded and stacked as you can see in the photos. The
trees are then inventoried and selected for quality of
potential Lumber.
Now it's time to make the tree
into a more manageable working board. This is the actual
milling process. The trees are cut into lumber using the
machine you see in this photo. Depending on the quality
of the tree and the diameter the trees will be cut anywhere
from 2 inches to 14 inches wide and 1 inch to 10 inches
thick. After the trees become lumber they are stacked
and sent into a kiln to be dried.
After being removed from the
kiln, the board is ran through a planer that smoothes
it and makes it even, bringing out the natural beauty
of the Oak. This is why no 2 Feeders
will ever be exactly the same. Heart of Oak tries
to keep the wood as natural as nature has grown it. This
is why you may see a little imperfection on your feeder.
However, rest assured knowing the lumber has been inspected
and your feeder
will never be fully built if it shows any kind of instability.
Larger Oak is used for the legs and ran through a table
saw to be made into 2 by 2 inch boards. The rest of the
process takes many hours for cutting the dish holes, smoothing
all the ends and setting your feeder
into the actual finished product. We hope you have enjoyed
the history of your feeder
and you are welcome to print or use any of this material
for your own use.
